After a stroll through the small village of Pola De Someido
we went into the office of the Parque Natural De Someido where they had a very
comprehensive display all about the flora, fauna , landscape etc of the region,
unfortunately all in Spanish so we just had to enjoy the descriptive pictures.
The lady there did however speak English and she provided us with a map and
booklet in English and instructions on the various walks available.
First we went into the Supermercado Cano to pick up some supplies
to make up a picnic. Then we set off on the long winding road to Alto de la
Farrapona at an altitude of 1708m where we started a walk that took us up to
and around four of the lakes of Lagos de Silencia
to an altitude of over 1900meteres. A most enjoyable walk
that started out with clear sunny skies although a bit cool as there was a
chill wind, and ended with us hardly being able to see on the way back down as
the clouds had come down into the valley.
Words cannot describe how beautiful and peaceful it was up
in the mountains with not a soul around and the eagles soaring above, and the
pretty lakes below. The mountains were a burst of colour with all the different
coloured blooms,
something that we had not expected, an abundance of purple
heather and yellow bloom, covering the hillside.
One interesting fact we discovered by managing to translate
some of the words on one of the information boards was that they had mined iron
ore up in the hills until fairly recently.
On our return we decided to stop off at one of the bars in
the town and try the Sidra that they had been cooling off in the town fountain,
where the cool water flows down from the hills. Delicious – tasted a bit like
scrumpy.
Although we were tired and exhausted from the day’s
activities and had decided we would like an early night, we discovered that the
norm seems that no restaurants open for meals until 8:30 so we went back to our
Palace, showered and changed and went back out again for our evening meal
yes I remember getting very hungry waiting for restaurants to open for dinner!
