Rome has many descriptions and one is the City of Fountains. We saw the Trevi fountain, and there is the famous Najad Fountain in the Piazza della Republica, which depicts wonderful nude women wrestling with mythical sea-creatures.

As well as the large, beautiful and famous ones there are also these small but important ones scattered all over. They run all the time, and the pipes must be well underground because the water comes out as cold as you would get from your refrigerator.

There is a very simple feature. The curved pipe has a hole in the top so if the exit is blocked, the water spouts up like this.




There are various shapes and sizes, though the the fire hydrant size are the most common.

We refreshed ourselves from these a few times. There were similar ones in Pompeii.
